A city built on high ground
High Point took its name from its position as the highest point on the 1856 North Carolina Railroad between Charlotte and Goldsboro, where it crossed the Great Western Plank Road. The city was incorporated in 1859, grew on furniture, textiles and woodworking, and counted 114,059 residents in the 2020 census (Wikipedia: High Point, North Carolina). It is the only city in North Carolina that lies in four counties, and parts of it rise above 1,000 feet, among the highest ground in the Piedmont.
Higher, more open ground catches more wind. Roofs on exposed hilltops and wide-open lots lose shingles in thunderstorms that leave sheltered neighborhoods untouched.
Housing ages, roof types
- Near downtown and the older neighborhoods: steep roofs, dormers, brick chimneys and additions with low-slope porch roofs. Flashing and chimney work come up often.
- Mid-century ranches: simple gable and hip roofs that are simple to replace, but often with more than one layer of shingles.
- Newer north-side subdivisions: complex rooflines with many valleys, which is where leaves and pine needles collect.
Market weeks and scheduling
The semi-annual High Point Market draws exhibitors and buyers from around the world each spring and fall. Traffic and parking near the showroom district get tight during market weeks, which is worth keeping in mind when scheduling a dumpster or deliveries for a downtown-area job.
Permits
Inside city limits, the City of High Point handles building permits and inspections (City of High Point). Because the city edges into four counties, addresses near the edges may fall under a neighboring jurisdiction. Confirm before work starts. See the permits guide.
Nearby
Jamestown borders the city to the northeast, Archdale to the southeast, and Greensboro to the north. Trinity and Thomasville come within half a mile of the city limits.
